overview

The California Institute of Computer-Assisted Surgery (CICAS) is located in the San Francisco Bay Area. CICAS researchers conduct basic and clinical research in surgical navigation and minimally-invasive surgical technology.

During the past several years, advances in computer hardware and software systems have given doctors new navigation tools that have proven useful in the pre-operative diagnosis and intraoperative surgical management of complex diseases. Computer assisted technologies continue to develop at a rapid pace and applications for surgical navigation are now used in neurosurgery, orthopedics, otolaryngology, and plastic and craniofacial surgeries.

The goal of CICAS is to expand the capabilities of diagnostic and surgical technologies such as ultrasound, fluoroscopes, endoscopes, surgical microscopes, and stereotactic systems to greatly improve the outcomes of computer assisted surgery. CICAS bridges the gap between engineering research concepts and the medical sciences to enable improvements in patient safety and healthcare outcomes.
