High-Bandwidth Surgical Telepresence
During the last three years, CICAS has experimented with various Internet protocols (fiber 100BT) for remote rendering and telepresence applications in the operating room. Shorter rendering time, coupled with faster computer networks and software that makes efficient use of network bandwidth will result in the creation of real-time, intraoperative volume-rendering systems. By using a high bandwidth network, CICAS will be able to transmit real-time 3D image updates to Stanford University Hospital's 20 operating rooms or other oncampus research facilities. A further goal is to share the application via 3D teleconferencing with off-site surgical teams, referring physicians, and other research communities. This work used Internet2 connections in collaboration with the Department of Computer Science.
